Bach Magnificat Workshop by Ros Reed

On Saturday 13th over 50 singers overcame Storm Callum to attend an Interesting, educational and enjoyable workshop under the innovative tutorlege of Robert Evans, masterfully accompanied by Alan Davies.

From physical warm ups , through vocal gymnastics and unpicking of complicated passages from JSBach's Magnificat, the singers grew in confidence and capability as the day went on .

We all went home buoyed up with new vocal techniques, rehearsal 'wins' , earworm music and cake!

The concert performance can't fail to be enhanced by the days work, and it is always good to sing alongside visitors from other choirs .

Bach Magnificat Concert Poster

The poster for our Bach Magnificat Concert on 10 Nov 2018 at Brecon Cathedral is now out. Our posters and programme covers are designed by Lesley Lillywhite and the  Usk Valley Artist’s Co-operative based at the Tower Gallery, Crickhowell.  The beautiful backgound image on this poster is of a ceiling in the Palazzo Te, or by its official name Palazzo del Te. The palace was constructed 1524–34 for Federico II Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua as a palace of leisure. Giulio Romano, a pupil of Raphael, was commissioned to design the building. The frescoes are the most remarkable feature of the Palazzo done in the late Renaissance Mannerism style. You can see our poster on our Concerts and Workshops page.

Brecon Singers Rehearsals now finished until 5 Sept and this is how our year has been so far!

Wow it has been a wonderfully busy and exciting year for the Singers. The year has flown by.  We started with our Brahms Requiem Concert on 11 November 2017.  A sell out performance under the baton of the wonderful Robert Evans with solos by Emilia Morton, Soprano soloist member of The Sixteen, and Nicholas Morton as our Baritone soloist.   Alan Davies and Peter Allwood  were wonderful with their four hands on a piano and the dramatic sounds of the Timpanist, Gareth Hamlin, rounded it all off.

November saw Brecon Singers hosting a workshop for Mendelssohn Elijah, led by Robert Evans who talked us through some of the intricacies of this challenging work.  Open to the public, this workshop completely sold out.

We were very pleased to be a part of the Christmas Lights Switch-on Event in Brecon on 18 November 2017.  It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Our Christmas "Carols and Canapes" concert is always special.  We were so thrilled to see so many people who attend year after year.  The Brecon Singers enjoyed singing all our favourite carols and in the interim offered, as usual, the most delicious spread of canapes.

In May, it was time to salute British composers with our Best of British concert.  There was something for everyone...Handel, Byrd, Purcell, Parry, Stanford, Rutter, Tavener, Chilcott, Vaughan Williams, MacMillan and Mathias.  Serena Jopson From Kington was our Soprano soloist and Meirion Wynn Jones on Organ enthralled us with his playing.

We finished off last week with our Summer Jolly programme for members and family and it was fun, whimsical, and full of entertainment and good food.

We look forward to returning to our rehearsing for our Bach Magnificat concert on 10 November 2018 in Brecon Cathdral and we hope to see you there.  Robert Evans has agreed to lead a Bach Magnificat workshop for us on 13 October 2018.  Please email us if you would like to attend. More details to follow.

Rehearsals commence at 730 pm on Wednesday 5 September at Christ College, Neaudd Goffa Memorial Hall and new members are always welcome.  We look forward to seeing you.

Thank you for all your support!!
